Letâs get something straight right up front: the stateâs name is Hawaii, and in the State of Hawaii there is an island named Hawaii. Itâs kind of like New York, New York, except for the palm trees and the whales and the volcanoes. But you knew that, didnât you?
But to avoid confusion between the state and the island (and the subject of this chapter), weâre going to do as the locals do and call the island of Hawaii by its more popular nickname: The Big Island.
Itâs an apt name, anyway. The Big Island is indeed the largest in the entire Hawaiian archipelago, with more land area than all of the other islands combined. If that doesnât tickle your fancy, consider some of these additional superlatives:
